Thorncrest Village ~ The Early Days

Life in the Village – More Events (continued)

The Village Central Park – For us kids, it was the park. Not only could we play safely in the park, there were plenty of events and equipment to keep us amused. One of the events that I remember most, not counting Christmas, were the “Mayday” celebrations. Each year the park and the tennis courts were set up to celebrate the arrival of spring. A large “maypole” would be erected and ribbons would be attached to the top of the pole and hang down to the ground. Each of us (those who were going to dance around the pole) would pick up one of the ribbons. The “Maypole Dance” would then begin and we would all circle the pole, weaving the ribbons in unique patterns. After that we would gather together for a fun ” feast” (pot luck barbeque). It was a great ceremony, especially for what was to follow about to follow! SUMMER!

The great part about the park is that we could play safely until late in the day. However, when it was time to go home (this applied to lunch and dinner), Richard’s father would blow his bugle. It was so loud that people for “miles” likely heard it! We (Richard) certainly heard it, and when he did, all play (Richard’s) stopped immediately and he would take off like a shot! Richard’s father was very strict. With Richard gone, we all knew that it was time for us to go home too.
